junk food on a plate

90/10

Last week while at the grocery store I spotted one of my lovely customers. What did I do? I hid. Yep, ran down the cracker aisle, put my head down and pretended the nutritional information on a box of Bretons was the most interesting piece of literature since The Goldfinch (which is great btw…The Goldfinch…not the box of Bretons).

Why am I such a crazy woman you ask? Well here’s the truth. My cart contained the following: white baguette, a big old wheel of brie cheese, salt and vinegar chips, licorice, a lemon (ok that part was alright) and bacon. I’d love to say “oh I was just shopping for the mm man and my kids” but the truth is, every single one of those items (besides the bacon which seriously was for the mm man) was bought because I choose it. On the drive home, feeling horrible and let’s face it, full of grocery cart guilt, it hit me….get over yourself Karla! First of all, I missed out on chatting with my lovely customer because I let fear of her potential judgement stop me (which is absolutely nuts because she probably could care less about what was in my cart). Secondly, like you my dear friend, I am not an idiot. I know that I feel best when I eat unprocessed, clean food, and I would say that is how I eat 90% of the time. The other 10% however, doesn’t make me a bad or unhealthy person and I shouldn’t beat myself up (or feel guilty) it..

I think in a world where everyone is constantly showing off just how healthy their meals are via social media #eatwell #greeneverything #kalerules we sometimes forget it’s just food and we are #justhuman. I’m clearly not saying let’s throw in the healthy eating towel, grab your sweats and a pint of ice cream, just simply let’s stop being so unkind to ourselves. Let’s focus on the 90 (or maybe this week it’s 70%, 40%, whatever, doesn’t matter) and let go of the 10. Deal?
